The Mason Jar: Bats in the Belfry

Did you ever sleep out with your friends? Share a memory of staying overnight with a friend.

I think my most memorable sleepover happened when my friend "J" stayed over at my house. J was a year younger than me in school. Although, we lived only a couple of miles apart and went to the same church, we didn't really become close friends until high school. As kids we were friends, but as we weren't in the same grade we weren't as close of friends. Before my senior year of high school J had only been to my house twice, yet one of those times was so eventful that we still laugh about it.

J came to sleep over one night while we were still in elementary school. We decided that we were going to sleep out in the yard, so we hauled our sleeping bags to my backyard. We got ready for bed then climbed into our sleeping bags around dusk. It was still a little light outside as we lay on our stomachs, about a foot apart, talking and giggling. Then suddenly a bat swooped down and zoomed between us! We both screamed and yanked our sleeping bags over our heads. We waited for what seemed like an eternity (30-60 seconds probably) before we poked our heads our of sleeping bags. The coast was clear. We decided that we were still going to sleep under the stars, and hoped that we wouldn't get attacked by bats. We lay on our backs looking at the stars. It was really fun... for a while. As our eyes adjusted we saw dark swooping bats, then we heard strange noises in the dark of the night. We jumped out of our sleeping bags, grabbed them and our pillows, and high-tailed it for safety inside.
